More than anything, this book makes me sad because it could have been great, perhaps even exceptional. I mean seriously who can resist mad monks, clockwork and scientific geniuses, it sounds like a script for a movie. It’s a wonderful example of how an irreverent approach to much loved genres can lead to a truly great story. It's a little more like reading bon mots by a philosopher or humorist, and a little less like reading a single yarn from a fine storyteller. I will say the author establishes a fine amount of atmosphere that is evil and frightening, but the cramming of all the above sent me onto a dizzy mission.

He wasn't wearing his glasses and misread the title, leading him to ask incredulously if I was really reading a biography of Angela Merkel. The lack of internal characterisation is exactly what gives fairytales such a rich and lasting life because they are meant to be rearranged and retold according to each storyteller’s gifts. It seemed like the author tried to be too smart with the twist, philosophy (think Laplace’s demon), and story. Honestly, if you’re still reading at this point you may just want to get one of my books, because they are in many ways a more truthful self-description than any biog. I will note, especially in contrast to a number of other recently read books that pour on the cultural-referencing humor, that Harkaway manages to stay true to the emotion of the book and the family drama at its heart.Every so often, I run across a book that catches me completely by surprise; a book that I picked up on a whim, having never heard of it before, that strikes a chord and immediately becomes a firm favourite. Harkaway alludes to things and then goes off in some other direction, eventually circling back around to connect the dots.
